Official handover of playfit® outdoor equipment to Clausthal University of Technology

A milestone for better health and physical activity on the Clausthal University of Technology campus has been reached. The new, accessible fitness room on the university’s central campus was officially opened on November 12, 2025.

What began about 1.5 years ago as a crazy idea—to have students design their own sports equipment for the campus as a lecture project by students for students—has taken shape.

The result: many successful exams and theses, a teaching-learning concept in which students take on real responsibility, a new understanding of health promotion within the setting of their own university, and a research collaboration with the outdoor equipment manufacturer playfit® that is so valuable to us. As of today, based on ideas developed by students, 9 playfit® outdoor fitness stations have been made available on campus for sports and exercise.

Our goal is to encourage more physical activity in a predominantly sedentary (university) daily routine, thereby promoting health on campus and improving teaching and learning outcomes. The low-barrier outdoor equipment, located along the central axis between the cafeteria, university library, lecture halls, and student dormitories, invites students to do more than just take an active break.

This is our contribution to a healthy, livable, and attractive campus. This is our understanding of the values of the Okanagan Charter, which we signed a few weeks ago. Action, not just talk!

Phase 1 is complete with the official opening, but the project is far from over. The next student projects are already underway, as there are still many ideas for further developing the campus around the exercise equipment in a participatory and sustainable way. It just takes courage, sufficient resilience, and creative ideas to continue shaping this process. To be continued ...

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the individuals, institutions, and companies that supported this project and made it possible. But our

greatest thanks go to the students in the Sports Engineering program. With your dedication and commitment, you have shown what is possible: transforming the university, energizing the campus, and promoting health. Making a lasting difference.

Now it’s time to get active on the Feldgraben area campus! 😎
