Jazz Funk/Contemporary Dance

Weekly registration via the University Sports registration system.

Jazz-Funk is a dance subgenre that emerged from the rise in popularity of hip-hop and street dance in the 1970s and 80s. It incorporates elements of ballet, jazz dance, as well as waacking and voguing from the LGBT scene in the U.S. Its foundation remains jazz dance, though with “groovier” movements.
Contemporary dance also combines various elements from the broader dance scene. Originally derived from ballet, jazz dance, and modern dance, these movements became “more abstract” and less linear. Today, contemporary dance has incorporated influences and techniques from a variety of dance styles, including African and Japanese dance styles. Contemporary dance also involves a great deal of improvisation.
